Four Simple Truths About Change

Have you ever felt as if “the system” is working against you and your business?

When change occurs in business it is often triggered by a change in government policy. This policy shift may originate at the Federal, Provincial or Municipal level. Policy is enacted in response to larger social or economic issues such as International trade or the environment. Regardless of its origin, the rules of the game for your industry have been changed.

Old strategies become useless. A shift in government policy is like venturing into a cold, dense fog on the open seas. In one moment all that was once familiar to you is replaced by uncertainty. You cannot see what lies ahead or beside you and you are powerless to go back. The skill and competency that gave you a sense of pride and confidence just a few moments ago is now questionable. Your very existence is suspended in a surreal state and, positive or negative, your mind begins to fabricate an understanding of your circumstance.

The human dynamic is engaged. Policy decision-makers in government believe they are serving the greater good. Those of us in business tend to believe that government is intentionally throwing additional hurdles in our path. In reality the personal experience of transition and change is equally challenging whether we:
• Work in government
• Are impacted by government policy
• Are in business for ourselves
• Are new residents to Canada

Social and economic change is like a turbulent sea that heaves us off our course. We tend to expect that others around us have greater stability…when in fact their experience may be strikingly similar to our own. In the face of risk and vulnerability we are inwardly focused. We form assumptions and expectations of what others can and cannot do for us. When others fail to meet our expectations animosity builds, tempers ignite, personalities withdraw and our relationships deteriorate. Without conscious intention we segregate into camps of “us” and “them”. Reconciliation of our differing perspectives appears futile, frustrating and even pointless.

New skills and strategies must be developed. The impact of change means venturing into the unknown. In the realm of the unknown, untried & untested opportunity must be created. Risk is a certainty. Your greatest assets become: strategy, foresight, resourcefulness, creativity and intuitive knowledge and exceptional communication skills. These are the skills that turn challenge into opportunity.
