Four Simple Truths About Risk

Have you ever woken up, examined your life and determined that you are “stuck in a rut” far from where you hoped to be? Noticing how you respond to risk and uncertainty may reveal valuable clues along a pathway to personal fulfillment and happiness.

Take time to reflect on your childhood & teen visions of what you expected adult life to be like. Are you living your dream? Or have you tossed your dreams aside covering them with time, doubt, disappointment, fear, family priorities and financial challenges? Take a few moments to compare where you are now with where you expected to be.

Notice what has stopped you along your journey. Examine the specific moments when you made directional choices in life, career or business. Are there patterns in your decision-making? When presented with options do you tend to choose a path to certainty or venture into the unknown? What stories play out in your mind when you are considering the predictable versus unfamiliar? Do you choose what’s right for you or are you strongly influenced by what others want for you?

Rummage through the trash bin of your dreams. What dreams have you discarded? Are your dreams really out of reach or could simple strategies be developed to help you achieve your goals over a period of time? Consider that only two things stand between you and your dreams – choice and action. Only you control both.

Start small but take action. Commit to do something every month. Read a book, take a course, research a business plan or spend time in nature. Set one larger goal for yourself each year and commit to follow through. Celebrate your successes but expect to meet challenge along the way. Mentally prepare for it. When adversity strikes simply ask (yourself and others) “How can I overcome this obstacle?” Your own resourcefulness and that of your network may surprise you.

I adopted this practice in 2004. What a magnificent difference it’s made! In less than one year I obtained my motorcycle license, dropped 25 lbs, exercise regularly, and am learning a foreign language. When I changed my perspective everything else shifted too. Life’s gifts come in small packages – many are free! Unwrap one tiny gift each day and soon you will be amazed by the difference in your surroundings!

What will you take on this year?
